MMS Newsletter – January 2026

Happy New Year!

Wishing everyone a wonderful new year! We have lots of learning opportunities and great activities planned for the remainder of the year.

Staffing Update

We welcome Mr. Jon Bettner back. He will be teaching ELA and Social Studies in gr. 8. His teaching partner will be Mrs. Adams. We thank Ms. Neufeld for her time with us, and we wish her the best in her future endeavours.

Mr. Penner will be away until the end of January. Mr. Blake Johnson will be his replacement until the end of the month. In February, Mr. Johnson will be moving into the grade 7 class which Mrs. Kuzyk is currently teaching. He will be the classroom teacher for that class until the end of June 2026.

We welcome Mr. John Marshall back to MMS. He will be coaching and supporting our new teachers.

Parent Committee Meeting

Our Parent Committee will be meeting on Wednesday, January 7 from 7 - 8pm. All Parents/Guardians are strongly encouraged to attend the meeting. We look forward to hearing your ideas!

New Entry to MMS for Town Student Procedures

Effective immediately, all town students will enter from the SW door known as the grade 6 entrance. Grade 7/8s can still exit from the NW entrance at lunch and the end of the day.

Visitors to MMS

To ensure safety of all our students and staff, all visitors to MMS are reminded to report to the office immediately upon arrival and sign in. We are also asking visitors to be patient as they wait while we confirm identity and purpose to the building. Once this is determined, they will be buzzed in and asked to report to the office.

З Новим Роком!

On Friday January 9th, students in the Ukrainian Bilingual program will be out Ukrainian Christmas carolling in our community for the afternoon. Students will carol to the residents of Vermillion East, Kinsmen Villa and St. Paul's Home.

Dress for the Weather

Winter season is here and that brings a change in the weather. Recess can be very chilly, but fresh air and exercise are important. Warm jackets, toques, and mitts are essential for our students to feel comfortable outside. We will stay inside for recess if the temperature and/or windchill are -27.

Hooray for our Student Committee!

Our student committee and supervising teachers Mrs. Lenius, Mrs. Adams, Mme Thomas and Ms. Glover planned and organized a fun week for our students during the week before the holiday break. In addition to Spirit Week, there was a door decorating contest, an assembly and a video compilation of the talent we have in our school. The Student Committee also helped set, serve and take down during our Winter feast that was held on December 17. Special mention to Mrs. Jarri Thompson and the Dauphin Friendship Center for preparing the wonderful food that we enjoyed.

Kindness and Generosity at MMS

Marsi, meegwetch, thank you to Mrs. Durston’s grade 6 class. They held a bakesale to raise funds to donate to our local community. The students worked together in our kitchen to create wonderful treats to sell to our students and staff. Marsi to everyone who supported their fundraiser. The class was able to raise $640 to support a Christmas Hamper through the Dauphin Friendship Center. It was a great learning experience for the class.

Our Student Committee also worked to hold a canned food drive to support our local community. We were encouraged by our local McDonald’s to reach and surpass our goal. A total of 902 cans were collected and delivered to the Dauphin Friendship Centre.

Maamaawi Abing Drum Group

Marsi, meegwetch, thank you to our Performance Drum group. They sang an honour song at the drum awakening ceremony at the DRCSS on December 8. They then stayed to enjoy the feast as part of the ceremony. We are very proud of them for being courageous to share their talent with the whole of the DRCSS students and staff.
